It was National Indigenous People’s Day yesterda

It was National Indigenous People’s Day yesterday. We spent the day on the reservation, celebrating with the rest of our island community.

I was also asked to do an interview where I shared what life was like leaving not only the reserve but also home for the first time at 12 years old.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Since our island only has an elementary school any child has to leave home in order to go to high school on the mainland.
Sometimes that means spending months away from your family, while you board with strangers. It’s hard now to imagine Penelope or Lake living with strangers at such an important time in their lives. But I did, and other students still do.

Since the weather is so unpredictable from October to March, we’re forced to leave otherwise we’d miss too much school. They ferry often stops running during those months due to high winds and unpredictable storms.

But that’s just ONE story out of hundreds of life on a reservation, and growing up Indigenous.
