Picking the right hosting platforms for your blog

how to start a blog, start blogging for beginners.

I get asked all the time about “how to start a blog” and about picking the right hosting platforms for your blog. As the internet is filled with so many tutorials, tips, and guides to launching a blog, I thought it would be great to sort through the noise and tell you exactly what to do. I also get asked about my cameras and what I use to take my photos and you can find that blog post here.

Keep in mind this is a massive subject and I can’t get into everything, so this is geared specifically to the person who has no idea what it means to start a blog, or how to start a blog.

Figure out who you are and what you want to share.

First thing you need to do before anything else is understand who you are, what you have to offer and why you want to get into blogging. You may want to document your child’s learning, your upcoming trip or your obsession to skincare. Whatever it is make sure you know what you’ll be writing about.

Do you want to be able to make money? or is this just for fun?

In other words, do you want to be able to make money one day? If you haven’t decided yet thats okay too. Im asking you this question because you need to decide if its worth investing into a blog with the ability to monetize right now. I personally knew what my goals were right off the bat, and I invested a big chunk of money into this blog. But only after I was blogging (on a separate blog) since 2013 for free. It was like a secret hobby where I would post my stories, photos and just write to write, and after years of free blogging I decided to make the switch.

You have many options for platforms that allow you to start blogging.

Think of it as picking a notebook to start writing in. Each on of these has different things I like about them, and things I don’t. This is just a quick “does it cost money or not” for you.

Blogger

Totally free to sign up, with free templates that aren’t the prettiest but you can eventually purchase other templates from graphic designers.

Squarespace

Also, totally free and has a lot more options for pretty templates but I’m pretty sure you will eventually have to pay monthly to use.

WordPress

Free to start and is very similar to blogger. Its my favourite, but not a lot of free templates just so you know.

WordPress.org

The expensive self-hosted site that many professional bloggers use or start off on. It costs a lot to run in my opinion and you will probably want to buy a template as well.

What goes into a name and a domain

That rhymes! But seriously it is so important to think of a name you will love for a very long time. This was also a mistake I made during my first 6 months, where I changed my name and lost a lot of followers because they couldn’t find me. But that’s okay, its the process of finding out who you are, who your audience is and what you want to accomplish in this space.

I want to separate this into several different parts, so if your interested in learning more about blogging I will be sharing more soon. As always if you have ANY questions feel free to email me, (stephanievainer (at) hotmail . com), DM me or Tweet me.
