Our Project List for the House in 2021

This article we are sharing our project list for the house in 2021.

I originally planned to write this post at the beginning of 2021, but we weren’t sure if we were going to be moving at the time. So I decided to hold off sharing our project list with you all until we knew 100% if we would be staying here or if we were moving.

Then last week we finally made a decision to stay at least for another two or three years. I love our home and I have so much planned for it. But we are slowly outgrowing our 3 bedroom bungalow especially with another baby on the way.

If you’re not sure what I’m talking about you can read about our House Hunting Journey here.

This article is about the project list we have for our house in 2021.

Project List 2021

There are a few major things I want to get done this year, starting with:

1. Vinyl Flooring

If I had to choose one thing to do from the project list, it would definitely be the floors. I hate the carpet we have now, when we first viewed the house the carpets didn’t look that bad. But as soon as the previous owners moved out we saw the real state of it without furniture or rugs. While we were saving and completing more important projects first, I bought a carpet cleaner which did lift a lot of the stains. But now I just hate the colour and I personally don’t like wondering what it was that stained them so bad.

Last week I measured the square footage of our living room, dining room, kitchen and hallway. Ordered vinyl plank samples and all that’s left is to find something I like and place an order. I will be writing a blog post to give some guidance when choosing flooring for your home, from the type to the colour. I think flooring is a struggle for a lot of people but it can make a huge difference in your home. So keep an eye out for that post next week!

2. Kitchen Counters

There are a few things I need to finish (like the shiplap in the kitchen), but I decided to change our countertops last minute. I have already ordered samples, measured them, and reached out for quotes. So it’s now a matter of setting aside a budget and start working towards that goal. 3. Bathroom

The bathroom is going to be the biggest project this year. I have been so stuck on the direction and what to start first. We will defiantly need to save more money for this project but in the mean time I want to do a “phase 1” (or 2?) bathroom update which will include:

  • Fixing the walls
  • Caulk along with the tub
  • Paint the walls
  • Change the vanity
  • New faucet
  • I would love to use wallpaper in there
  • Finishing touches

4. The deck

We do have a timeframe for this project and plan on having it complete by the end of June at the latest. It shouldn’t be a big project, it’s mostly finding outdoor furniture we like. But we do plan on either building a pergola or finding another option for the harsh afternoon sun. A few other items on my to-do list for the deck are to buy flowers for the pots, build planters and add more seating.

5. The Front Porch

Another quick addition to our project list this year, and one that will hopefully be easy to complete. The front porch has been a sore spot for me to decorate. It’s a pretty little space, but the problem is the width of it. It’s not big enough for chairs and a table, so I’ve been trying to figure out a way to make it look good without it looking messy. So far my plan is to get a bench with storage, and perhaps a solid wood deck cabinet to hide all the recycling.

6. Backyard, Garden & Firepit

These will all be projects on their own, but I’ll save you and just tell you a few things I plan on doing. The backyard needs some serious TLC and this is the year I’m going to fix it. The first thing I need to do is address the walkway situation. The original owners laid pea gravel which I really like but our Canadian winters have pushed the stones everywhere in the yard. I’ve been brainstorming some inexpensive solutions that will look good without costing a ton of money.

As for the garden (my favorite on the project list), we are going to put two garden boxes in the back of our yard. It’s an open space I had no idea what to do with but I think this would be perfect! If I decide to make the garden boxes this year, I will be sure to share it with you on the blog and Instagram stories.

Last but not least is the fire pit. I have a few ideas about what to do with it, and so far I think we will replace the broken outdoor furniture with Muskoka chairs. I want something that will last a few seasons but still look really good. Any suggestions?
